Reproduction
Pandas are solitary animals and the male and female only come together to mate. Female Pandas reach sexual maturity when they are approximately 6 years old, they give birth to 1 or 2 cubs every 2 years. New born Pandas weigh 85-113 grams which is 1/900th of their mothers weight. Infant mortality is high. Gestation can take between 83 to 163 days, with 135 being the average. A cub nurses for approximately 4 months and then nibbles bamboo. About 6 months of age it no longer nurses but stays with the mother until approximately 18 months old. The father has no role in the raising of the cubs. Pandas in captivity can live to 30 years old.
